Understanding Your BMI: What the Number Really Means
Body Mass Index shows up on almost every health form you'll ever fill out, yet most people have never been told exactly what it measures or, more importantly, what it doesn't. Here's a clear explanation of where the number comes from, why doctors still use it, and where it stops being useful for an individual.
How BMI is calculated
BMI is simply your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres, squared: BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)². If you use pounds and inches, the formula is weight (lb) ÷ height (in)² × 703. It was developed in the 1830s by a Belgian mathematician, Adolphe Quetelet, as a way to describe the "average man" for population statistics — not as a diagnostic tool for individuals, which is worth remembering given how it's used today.

Why BMI is useful at a population level
For tracking trends across large groups — a country's public health statistics, or a clinical study comparing thousands of participants — BMI is fast, free, and requires no special equipment. It correlates reasonably well with body fat percentage on average across a population, which makes it genuinely useful for epidemiology and research.
Where it breaks down for individuals
The problem is that "on average" hides a lot of individual variation. BMI cannot distinguish between muscle and fat, which means:
- Athletes and bodybuilders often register as "overweight" or "obese" by BMI despite having low body fat, because muscle is denser than fat.
- Older adults can have a "normal" BMI while having lost significant muscle mass and gained fat — a pattern sometimes called "normal weight obesity" that BMI misses entirely.
- Where fat is distributed matters for health risk (visceral fat around organs is more concerning than fat elsewhere), and BMI says nothing about distribution.
- Ethnic differences in the relationship between BMI and health risk are well documented — several health bodies recommend lower BMI cutoffs for people of South and East Asian descent, for example, because health risks tend to appear at lower BMI values in these populations.
What to actually do with your result
If your BMI falls outside the "normal" range, the useful next step isn't to panic or dismiss it — it's context. Someone who trains regularly and has a high BMI due to muscle mass has very different implications than someone with a sedentary lifestyle and the same number. If you have concerns about your weight or health, a conversation with a doctor who can look at the fuller picture will tell you far more than the BMI number alone.
